“Calcium Deficiency and Cultural Remedies: Is Eating Mitti Safe?”
Introduction
I am surprised at the thought that even in poor rural localities, women (especially those who is pregnant) are the ones to eat mitti (soil or clay) as a source of calcium thinking that it will be a more efficient way of absorbing this mineral. It comes as a surprise to many when they first hear about the practice, although the fact is that it is essential to recognize the fact that, as geophagy, this behavior has been part of our culture and history.
Cultural Background
In my research, I have found that geophagy is common in various parts of the world, including rural India and Africa. Geophagy has been predominantly practiced traditionally where pregnancy and mineral-like experiences led women to eat soils or earth-like materials.
Health Risks
From my side, I have to make it very clear that women who eat mitti are taking a very big risk to their health. That is, consuming lead or harmful bacteria and digestive disorders can be some of the side effects. Nutrient absorption might be the other potential problem.
Safe Alternatives
In order to eat enough calcium, I propose that girls can consume calcium-enriched foods such as milk, and leafy green vegetables, or else they should opt for supplements. Besides, I invite females to first of all see a doctor who can prescribe treatments for them instead of seeking solutions that might be dangerous.
Conclusion
Whereas I sympathize with those who still adhere to the cultural tradition of mitti consumption, I appeal that the dangers of this habit are much higher than the potential benefits.
