What is Monkeypox? Symptom, causes and Treatment!

What is Monkeypox?

Monkeypox is a viral infectious disease caused by the monkeypox virus, a member of the orthopoxvirus family. It is related to smallpox but generally less severe. While endemic to parts of Central and West Africa, recent outbreaks have spread to other regions, raising global health concerns.

Symptoms of Monkeypox:

Monkeypox has two stages:

  1. Early Stage (1–5 days):
    • Fever
    • Headache
    • Muscle aches
    • Swollen lymph nodes (a distinguishing feature from smallpox)
  2. Rash Stage:
    • Begins 1–3 days after fever onset.
    • Rash progresses from flat lesions (macules) to raised bumps (papules), fluid-filled blisters (vesicles), and pustules, eventually crusting over and falling off.

The disease usually lasts 2–4 weeks.

Cause of Transmission:

It spreads through:

  • Close contact with infected individuals (skin-to-skin contact or body fluids).
  • Contaminated objects like clothing or bedding.
  • Respiratory droplets from prolonged face-to-face interactions.
  • Direct exposure to infected animals (e.g., rodents, monkeys).

Prevention and Treatment:

  1. Prevention:
    • Avoid close contact with infected individuals or animals.
    • Practice good hygiene, including handwashing.
  2. Treatment:
    • Most cases resolve without treatment.
    • Antiviral medications like tecovirimat (TPOXX) are available for severe cases.

Final Thoughts:

While monkeypox is not as contagious as COVID-19, awareness and prompt action are crucial to prevent its spread. By maintaining good hygiene and following public health guidelines, you can minimize the risk of infection.
