Cleaning products that you use daily are a cool chemical process. So, let me tell you about how soap and detergents can perform their invaluable tasks.

Soap Functioning

It is necessary to take note of it being produced by saponification, which is a chemical reaction between fats or oils with lye as an input. As to soap, the molecule is divided into a long hydrophobic tail, and an ionic head that is hydrophilic.

  • The Hydrophobic tail is a part of the molecule that grabs dirt onto itself.
  • The Hydrophilic head is a part of the molecule that sticks to water.

Dirt is removed by soap as follows: The hydrophobic tail of the soap links to the dirt molecules, and at the same time, the hydrophilic head is left in the water. That way micelles are formed working like laundry baskets that attract and remove dirt, making it easier to be rinsed off.

How Detergents Are Made to Work

A group of surfactants called detergents can work efficiently in hard water, where soap scum does not form. Detergents also use surfactants to turn oils into minute particles before they can be washed away with water in the same way as soap does.

The Impact of Surfactants

  • Soap and detergents use surfactants as their main active ingredient, which takes the place of soap since they defeat the surface tension of the water causing it to remove the oil and dirt.
